Report: Trash companies´ use of alternative-fuel trucks is growing fast

Feb. 13

New research indicates there is robust growth in the use of alternative fuel trash trucks both in the United States and internationally.

Inform, a national environmental research group, has released a new report entitled "Greening Garbage Trucks: Trends in Alternative Fuels Use, 2002-2005." The latest report follows a 2002 report on the issue by Inform.

The new report states there are now almost 1,500 trash trucks using natural gas as fuel.

"Inform has estimated that if every conventional diesel-burning garbage truck in use in the U.S. today is replaced with a new natural gas model, one ton of nitrogen oxide -- a key component of health-threatening smog -- is eliminated," report author James Cannon said.
