UTRECHT, The Netherlands, July 12, 2006
(Refocus Weekly)
A windfarm off the shore of Belgium will involve
66 turbines and an investment of Euro 800 million.
Belwind, part of the Econcern group, wants to install the
facility on Bligh Bank, 46 km from the port of Oostende. Its
application for a concession to install the turbines was submitted
in April, further offshore than applications from C-Power and
Eldepasco, whose concessions have been granted.
The 5 MW turbines would be placed on the shoal, in depths of 20 to
35 m.
“The Bligh Bank project is part of Econcern's growth strategy, which
involves a well-balanced project portfolio spread over a number of
countries,” says Dirk Berkhout of Econcern. “It's our largest
project to date, and will also be one of Belgium's biggest
sustainable energy investments. It's not possible to undertake such
a project on your own so, to ensure it becomes a success, we'll be
engaging the right partners at the right time.”
Various phases need to be completed before the Bligh Bank windfarm
can become operational. Once a concession is received from the
federal energy ministry, it will need permits from the federal
ministry of the North Sea and, in the most favourable situation,
construction would start in 2009 and the windfarm would be
operational in 2010.
Belwind was founded by Econcern to develop the Bligh Bank windfarm.
The Econcern group comprises Ecofys, Ecostream, Evelop and
Ecoventures which, collectively, deliver sustainable energy projects
and products. It employs 400 professionals in ten countries and is
one of Europe's 500 fastest-growing companies.
The Evelop subsidiary currently holds a wind portfolio of 4,000 MW,
including the 120 MW Q7 offshore wind project in the Netherlands and
the 315 MW Sheringham Shoal project in the UK.
