Cheney urges Alaska to take prompt action on natural gas pipeline

Washington (Platts)--30Jun2006

US Vice President Dick Cheney has asked the Alaska Legislature to
"promptly enact" legislation to facilitate construction and operation of the
Alaska natural gas pipeline.

The Alaska Legislature "is the governmental entity that holds the fate of
the Alaska Gas Pipeline in its hands," Cheney wrote in a letter dated June 27.
"As you consider the revenue and other provisions of the proposed legislation?
Please consider the needs of the nation as a whole along with the important
interests of Alaska."

Early action is necessary to move the process forward, Cheney wrote.

Enactment of legislation now will enable federal agencies to begin a
process to comply with existing federal laws to initiate construction "and to
work with our Canadian counterparts to secure their cooperation," he wrote.
"Time is of the essence."

The pipeline would run from Prudhoe Bay through Canada to the US pipeline
system.

Action by the state legislature has bogged down because of a dispute over
fiscal terms for the pipeline.
