In what was touted as the nation's largest fuel cell project, FuelCell Energy Inc. announced last week that a state-backed fund is providing a loan of up to $500,000 for pre-development financing of a proposed 10 megawatt power station in Bridgeport, Conn., that would incorporate five of the company's 2 megawatt fuel generating units.

The Danbury, Conn.-based fuel cell manufacturer said the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund has signed a loan agreement with Bridgeport Fuel Cell Park LLC in support of a power facility to be built at a brownfield site in Bridgeport.

The project also will involve PurePower LLC of Farmington, Conn., a consulting firm with experience in assessing the feasibility and implementation of stationary fuel cell commercial generation projects.

"It's exciting to know that the Bridgeport Fuel Cell Park's proposed 10- megawatt fuel cell power plant, when completed, will be the largest in the country, if not the world," said Lise Dondy, chief operating officer of the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund. "This project is important to our citizens because it will be supplying power clean power to the electricity grid, thereby helping to relieve the transmission congestion found in southwest Connecticut."
