EU backs organic developments
Wednesday 12 July 2006
The European Commission has approved funding of
more than €55m for agricultural programmes – including organics – across 19
member states. The funding, of which the Commission will provide half, will
be dedicated to 31 approved projects.
“European Union farm products are unique in their quality and diversity”
said Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural
Development.
“In an increasingly open global market, we need to redouble our efforts to
explain their benefits to consumers. It is not enough to produce excellent
food and drink; we also need to get smart when it comes to marketing. EU
programmes of this sort can really help our producers in an increasingly
competitive world.”
The UK is among the member states that will benefit from the development,
along with other including Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal.
