Electricity from Solar Heating- the First Solarthermal Tower Generational Facility When the rays of the sun are collected from a 1000mē field of mirrors and reflected upon the apex of a 50m tower, the concentration of these rays have the potential to produce temperatures high enough to generate steam, which in turn can be converted into electricity through the utilization of a turbine. For 25 years, the German Aerospace Center, in conglomeration with the Spanish Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT), has developed and tested solarthermal installation technologies. A series of commercial solar power installations (German) have already been planned and built in Southeast Spain. The first German installation of its kind, in the less sunny city
of Juelich, with a solar reflector surface 20,000mē and a tower height of
50m, should contribute much knowledge concerning the marketability of
this technology of the future. (Press
Release of the BMU from July 5, 2006, German) |
