Energy
efficiency pays off

The Field Museum's high-tech, ultra-efficient cooling system doesn't
result in less electricity being consumed at the 1.25
million-square-foot institution.
But the system is so efficient, it saved almost the entire cost of
supplying electricity to the Field's new 200,00-square-foot addition.
Before the Field replaced its 36-year-old heating-ventilating-
air-conditioning system in 2004, the museum was spending $1,238,000 a
year on electricity alone. Last year, after the 200,000-square- foot
addition opened, the museum spent $1,300,000 on electricity.
So, the museum spent 5 percent more on electricity in 20 percent more
space.
Even a consumer as rich as a pharaoh can see that's quite a bargain.
