Method Takes Aim at Global Warming by Offsetting Corporate Carbon Footprint
Method is taking a comprehensive approach to addressing its carbon footprint. In addition to offsetting electricity and natural gas usage for its offices, Method is offsetting all of the electricity used to manufacture products at its 13 facilities around the country. The company is also offsetting all of its employee commuting and travel.
"Offsetting Method's carbon footprint is a core strategy in our commitment to sustainability as a business. Green Mountain Energy Company helped make offsetting possible," said Adam Lowry, Method co-founder. "It is a milestone to have nailed this and we look forward to building on the program."
"Method has taken carbon management to a new level by focusing on all aspects of its business -- business operations, product manufacture and employee commuting and travel," said Gillan Taddune, chief environmental officer for Green Mountain Energy Company. "They have raised the bar compared to other companies who are offsetting their carbon footprint."
Using Wind Energy to Offset Emissions Associated with Electricity Usage
By purchasing wind energy credits Method is helping to avoid over 950,000 pounds of CO2 emissions in just one year -- as much as a car would produce in over 1 million miles of driving. This has the equivalent environmental benefit of recycling over 2.2 million aluminum cans or recycling over 380,000 pounds of newspaper. The wind energy credits purchased by Method were sourced from projects located in the Northwestern region of the U.S.
Taking Advantage of Forest Sequestration
By supporting the planting of 1,000 trees, Method is offsetting the estimated 100 metric tons of CO2 emissions associated with their employee commuting and air travel footprint. That is like not driving over 245,000 miles. By supporting tree planting projects, Method contributes to the development of carbon "sinks," which facilitate the long term storage of carbon.
The trees will be planted in Chicago, IL along the O'Hare Expressway and Stevenson Expressway. The planted forest will also benefit communities adjacent to the urban traffic along the expressway year round. These trees will help absorb noise and air pollution as well as provide the residents of these communities with a more attractive atmosphere in which to live.
