Minn. developer to pay $410,000 to resolve mercury-spill case

July 11 --

A developer will pay $410,000 as part of a settlement regarding Minnesota´s largest mercury spill ever.

Contractor Property Developers Inc. will pay a $10,000 civil penalty, $375,000 in reimbursement and $25,000 for environmental improvements as a result of a settlement with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

The agreement stems from a 2004 incident in Rosemount, Minn., in which two youths broke into a garage where two jars of mercury from the former Brockway Glass factory property were being stored, the MPCA said.

The juveniles took the mercury to a nearby manufactured-home park where they played with the mercury and contaminated 49 people, including 18 children, as well as property, the state said.

The company has since removed all hazardous waste from the site and demolished all buildings on the property, the state said.
