DALLAS, July 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Each home uses energy differently, but to maximize efficiency, it's necessary to evaluate where improvements can be made and how lifestyle plays a part in overall usage.

"Everyone can conduct a simple home energy audit, either on your own or by calling your utility company or an independent auditor," said Jim Burke, Chairman and CEO of TXU Energy. "It's the best way to evaluate your usage and maximize your energy efficiency."

By performing an audit, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that a residence can reduce their energy costs by 10 percent to 15 percent, and at the same time, help reduce air pollution and dependence on foreign fuel imports. Here are some tips to get started.

* SYSTEM CHECKS -- Have your systems checked and tuned up once or twice

per year, especially older units. Losses from a poorly maintained

system accumulate over time -- sometimes at a rate of 1 percent to 2

percent each year. Check http://www.txu.com/acdealer for a TXU Energy

Authorized Dealer in your area.

* INSULATION -- Make sure that your walls and attic are properly

insulated. Adding insulation in your attic is one of the most cost

effective savings measures, and one that you can do yourself.

* LIGHTING -- Keep fixtures and bulbs clean. Dirt can block as much as 50

percent of the light.

* POOLS -- If possible, avoid running the pool pump constantly; eight

hours a day should be sufficient. An automatic timer on your pool pump

makes this convenient and helps to keep costs down.

* REFRIGERATION -- Vacuum behind your refrigerator at least once a year,

making sure to remove dirt and dust from the coils. Dust build- up not

only increases energy use, but can also cause the unit to break down.

* CLOTHES WASHER -- Your clothes washer uses about the same amount of

energy regardless of how much clothing is being washed, so wash large

loads of laundry.
