'We have to diversify away from oil': Bush at EU briefing

US President George W. Bush said Wednesday he an EU officials discussed
energy matters as part of their summit in Vienna, Austria, and noted "we have
to diversify away from oil."

Bush said a shift away from petroleum is needed so consumers can develop
new technologies aimed at creating alternative fuels. "That may seem
counterintuitive from someone from Texas," Bush acknowledged during a press
briefing in the Austrian capital, televised live.

During his State of the Union address in January, Bush said the US needed
to lessen its dependence on Middle East oil, comments that caught OPEC kingpin
Saudi Arabia by surprise.
