Coal freight on US railroads in week to June 17 rises 10.3%

Coal carloads on US railroads in the week to June 17 rose 10.3% compared
with the same period a year earlier to 143,863 carloads, the Association of
American Railroads said Thursday. Coal railcar volumes in week 24 in 2005
totaled 130,373, it said.
In the first 24 weeks of 2006, some 3.352 million railcars of coal were
transported, a rise of 4.1% compared with 3.221 million carloads in the first
24 weeks of 2005, AAR said.
Coke railcar loadings totaled 5,292 in the week to June 17, a rise of
0.5% compared with some 5,266 loadings in the same week a year earlier, AAR
said. So far in 2006, coke railcar loadings are down 3.6% compared with a year
earlier at 138,342 loadings, it added.
Total carload freight on US railroads in the week to June 17 totaled
345,939 cars, up 4.1% compared with a year earlier, with volume up 6.5% in the
West and 1.3% in the East, AAR said. The volume for the first 24 weeks of 2006
on US railroads totaled more than 8.1 million carloads, up 1.4% compared with
2005, it added.
