England would win ‘Litter World Cup’Wednesday 07 June 2006A survey from litter charity Keep Britain Tidy has found that a high number of English people are ‘ashamed’ of the state of the country’s streets and if there was such a thing as a ‘Litter World Cup’ awarded for the amount of rubbish discarded – England would be clear winners. The results of the questionnaire found that 70% of people were unhappy with the situation, and other nations are perceived to be cleaner with their waste. Research from the group has shown than the majority of the litter on England’s streets comes from young people on nights out, which will increase markedly over the coming month due to football’s World Cup. In anticipation, Keep Britain Tidy has begun an England and St. George themed awareness-raising campaign, targeting litter hotspots with football-related slogans such as “40 years of dirt – have some pride”. "How can you claim to be proud of your country when you treat it with such disdain?" said Alan Woods, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy. "If these young people were real patriots, they would do everything possible to re-build England's reputation as a green and pleasant land." "Over the last few years, we have managed to shrink the dog fouling problem and reduce graffiti and flyposting to manageable levels" continued Mr. Woods. "But fast food rubbish dumped after dark remains our biggest challenge. That is why we're getting stuck into it now and with your help, we will tackle it."
