Feds: Keep power plant open,
reduce emissions
June 2 --
Mirant Corp. must address environmental concerns
at its Alexandria, Va., power plant, which the U.S. Department of Energy
required to stay open last year despite pollution concerns.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued an administrative
order June 2 calling for Mirant Potomac River LLC to comply with
national air quality standards for sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and
particulate matter.
Mirant shut the plant down Aug. 24 because it could not comply with
air quality standards. It restarted limited operations at the plant
Sept. 21. In December, the DOE issued an order requiring the plant to
operate to prevent possible blackouts in Washington.
The EPA is requiring the company use sulfur dioxide emission controls
and operate six new sulfur dioxide monitoring stations in the area.
