New power plants will help meet state energy needs

East Bay Business Times - June 2, 2006

California has six new power plants with total output of more than 2,000 megawatts that will help the state meet electricity needs this summer, the California Energy Commission said Friday.

One plant, a 96-MW plant in Riverside operated by Riverside Public Utilities, starts commercial operation Friday. The plant, which is fired by natural gas and consists of two 48-MW simple-cycle combustion turbines and generator, will operate only in times of peak demand, the commission said.

A second plant, in Ripon, the 95-MW natural-gas-fired Modesto Irrigation District Electric Generation Station, will begin commercial operation on June 15.

Four other plants, in Turlock, Redlands, Sacramento and Palomar, have been on-line since January.
