Quebec to raise ethanol usage to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Calgary (Platts)--16Jun2006

Canada's Quebec province, as part of its 2006-2012 program to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions in the province, is promoting the increased use of
ethanol by having a minimum 5% ethanol in gasoline sold in the province, a
Quebec government release said Friday.

Quebec plans to have a minimum of 5% ethanol use in total gasoline sales
in the province by 2012. This action, the provincial government, believes will
help to reduced gasoline consumption by about 1.9 million barrels per year.

The province hopes to promote ethanol production using forest biomass,
agriculture and municipal waste and not corn alone. Quebec plans to have a
pilot plant to produce ethanol using non-corn feedstock in 2008.

Quebec, among Canadian provinces, is the second largest consumer of
gasoline in the country. Its gasoline consumption in 2005 was about 145,000
b/d, which accounted for 20.8% of national consumption, according to figures
published by Statistics Canada.
