Steel recycling rate reached record 63% in 2005, SRI reports

The U.S. steel recycling rate increased to a record 63 percent in 2005, according to the Steel Recycling Institute´s latest figures released June 1.

The 2005 recycling rate improves on 2004´s record setting 61.7 percent effort, said Bill Heenan, SRI president.

"Steel cans, along with paper, have become the financial and volume backbone of recycling," Heenan said.

Manufacturers recycled nearly 1.4 million tons of steel cans into various products in 2005, according to the SRI. More information is available at www.recycle-steel.org.
