UK aims for carbon neutrality

Tuesday 13 June 2006
The UK Government has unveiled a new range of sustainability targets, in a bid to demonstrate best practice green behaviour to business and the public. The general aim, outlined in the Sustainable Procurement Task Force’s report, is to reduce office-based emissions by 30% by 2020, through a number of initiatives which will cover the entire central government and its departments.

The initiatives include the recently introduced offsetting of official air travel, along with a number of other transport-orientated measures.

The developments will save around 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

"Government and the public sector have a key role to play in the new environment contract. The Task Force has suggested how we can use our purchasing power to achieve that,” said Environment Secretary David Miliband, announcing the report. "To show that we are serious about making the way we run government more sustainably, we are announcing these new targets for the government estate. We need to ensure that we show that big improvements are possible and we must deliver real value for money for the public purse."
