US total petroleum imports climb to new high in May: API
New York (Platts)--14Jun2006
Total US petroleum imports climbed to a new high in May of 14.331 million
b/d, up 6.2% from May 2005's 13.495 million b/d, the American Petroleum
Institute reported Wednesday in its monthly survey.
The previous import high was the 14.198 million b/d recorded in June
2005, an API spokeswoman told Platts.
Product imports in May reached their third highest level ever at 3.925
million b/d, up 17.9% from 3.329 million b/d. Crude imports rose to their
highest level in almost a year at 10.406 million b/d, up 2.4% from 10.166
million b/d in May 2005.
Contributing to the strength for products, API said, was a record 1.529
million b/d of gasoline imports, including blending components, up a whopping
32% from 1.158 million b/d.
Distillate imports reached 439,000 b/d, the highest level ever for May
and up 56.8% from 280,000 b/d a year ago, while jet fuel imports nearly
tripled to an "unusually strong" 257,000 b/d from 192,000 b/d, according to
API.
