WEF formally recognizes impacts of climate change

Dallas, Oct. 24 --

The Water Environment Federation approved a new climate change resolution during its annual Weftec conference.

The federationīs board of trustees voted Oct. 20 to formally recognize climate change and its impacts on the planetīs natural hydrologic cycle, which is the movement of water between the atmosphere, land and groundwater.

"The resolution supports WEFīs role as a leader within the water quality community by committing the federation to working with our members, member associations, and others to help reduce the impacts of climate change and to better prepare for its impacts," said WEF President Michael Read.

The resolution also urges WEF members and local agencies to become leaders in their communities by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from treatment facilities and related operations, and by educating the public.

"I believe that climate change is the paramount environmental issue of our time," Read said. "The adoption of this resolution is an important step for the federation and we look forward to working with our members and others to implement it."

Weftec is the largest water quality event in North America, attracting more than 16,000 attendees. The conference provides attendees with water quality education and training. The Water Environment Federation is a nonprofit organization with members involved with the water and wastewater industries.
