Opposition party pledges 100% from renewables

INVERNESS, UK, April 11, 2007.

The leader of the opposition party in Scotland wants all electricity to come from renewable energy sources.

“Renewable energy is potentially the biggest opportunity for Scotland since the Industrial Revolution,” says Nicol Stephen, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrat party. “We must exploit the environmental and economic benefits of green technology.”

“I will introduce an Energy Bill into Parliament this September to set a 100% target for generating electricity from clean, green sources by 2050,” he adds. “With our vast natural resources and know-how, Scotland has a unique opportunity to lead the global renewables revolution.”

Following his statement, Stephen met with officials of AWS Ocean Energy, a wave power developer that will create 2,000 jobs in the Highlands.

“That is just one example of the many thousands of green jobs and billions of pounds of new investment that will be generated for Scotland from renewable energy,” he adds. “New wave and tidal technologies will have a huge role to play.”

Stephen recently was recognized as ‘Green Politician of the Year’.

“Our 100% target will help turn Scotland into the world’s green energy powerhouse.” he says. “Scottish Liberal Democrats are determined to seize the opportunity with a 100% renewable electricity target.”
