Wal-Mart encourages workers to embrace sustainability

April 5 --

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is expanding its initiative to help employees incorporate sustainability principles into their daily lives, building on the company´s corporate commitment to the environment.

Personal Sustainability Projects develop individual goals for Wal-Mart and Sam´s Club workers, or associates as Wal-Mart calls them, to improve their health and the environment. Associates in eight stores in the Denver and Indianapolis areas participated in a pilot PSP program in July, and the company expanded the program in October to include stores in the Tampa, Fla., market. This year, Wal-Mart will expand the program to its 1.3 million U.S. associates with plans to further expand it to its international stores.

Highlights of the program include 300 associates in the Tampa area setting up home recycling programs and the establishment of paper recycling centers in all the Indianapolis stores. More than 20,000 employees have adopted PSPs in the three test markets.
