Montreal (Platts)--31Jul2007
Canada's environment ministry expects the country's national emissions
registry to be in place this fall, an official said late Monday.
Under the terms of the Kyoto Protocol, all Annex 1 member states -- those
states with mandatory emissions reduction targets to be reached by
2008-2012 -- must have a national emissions registry to track the purchase and
sale of carbon credits in the international market.
"We are aiming to have a contract for the procurement of Canada's
National Registry in place in the fall and hope to complete connection with
other national registries in 2008 through the United Nations' International
Transaction Log," Lynn Brunette, a spokeswoman for Environment Canada said.
The Canadian government earlier in 2007 proposed a regulatory framework
for emissions trading. It is currently under consideration. The framework
would create an emissions trading scheme with a price cap of C$15/mt
(US$14.08/mt).
