Water Reserves Drop to Critical Level in Major Power Plants in Turkey
Aug 06 - BBC Monitoring European As drought lingers almost all over Turkey, water reserves at a number of the country's hydroelectrical power plants have dropped to critical levels while an increased electricity demand is forcing some others to work at full capacity even though they lack enough water. Drought has also affected the three major hydroelectrical power plants in Turkey's southeast, Ataturk, Keban and Karakaya, causing water levels to shrink by one to five meters. Nevertheless, the three power plants are working at full capacity to meet boosting demand due to high temperatures and skyrocketing use of air conditioners. Authorities also said that they needed to pump water from Keban to Ataturk and Karakaya to sustain generating electricity at the latter two power plants. (c) 2007 BBC Monitoring European.
