Texas town vows to green itself

Dec. 5

Coppell, Texas, has committed to using renewable energy in its effort to green the city.

Mayor Doug Stover signed a one-year power purchase agreement, Dec. 4, with Direct Energy to supply 50 percent of the city´s electricity from wind power. Houston-based Direct Energy is a subsidiary of Centrica PLC. The city will reduce its carbon dioxide emissions by 4,000 tons through the deal, Stover said.

"People are ready for the city to take a leadership position in taking a sustainable approach to energy as part of our larger focus on being environmentally sustainable," he said.
