Xcel Energy to reduce emissions by 22 percent
Dec. 20
Xcel Energy Inc. will reduce carbon emissions by 22 percent through
conservation and renewable energy development under a plan filed with the
Minnesota Public Resource Commission.
The Minneapolis-based utility filed its 2007 Resource Plan with the
commission, detailing its strategy to meet renewable energy, conservation
and greenhouse gas reduction goals established by the state legislature.
The plan, which covers 2008 through 2022, calls for reducing carbon dioxide
emissions by 22 percent from 2005 levels by 2020. It also outlines Xcel’s
strategy to meeting the state’s mandate to supply 30 percent of its
customers’ electricity with renewable resources by 2020. Xcel will add 2,600
megawatts of wind energy to its portfolio by 2020. That’s in addition to the
1,300 megawatts of wind power it plans to have online by the end of 2008.
