Air Force experiments with
animal fat jet fuel
July 10 An Oklahoma refiner will provide renewable synthetic jet fuel to the U.S. Department of Defense as part of a larger program to look at the long-term prospects for supplying more environmentally friendly fuels. Syntroleum Corp., based in Tulsa, Okla., will supply the department with 500 gallons of synthetic jet fuel produced entirely from fats from Tyson Foods Inc. The Defense Department will test the fuel´s performance in military turbine applications as part of its Assured Fuels Program. The program is aimed at evaluating renewable jet fuel made from bio feedstock. The U.S. Air Force wants to get half of its fuel from domestic alternative sources by 2016.
