El Paso Corporation First to Achieve Climate Action Leader
Status in 2007
LOS ANGELES, July 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- El Paso Corporation has successfully certified its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory with the California Climate Action Registry (Registry), becoming the first company to earn the distinction of Climate Action Leader(TM) for 2007. The company is now voluntarily publicly reporting its 2006 GHG emissions under the Registry's rigorous program. El Paso Corporation owns North America's largest natural gas pipeline system, which is 43,000 miles long and transports approximately one-quarter of the natural gas consumed in the country each day. Their exploration and production operation ranks in the top 10 of United States independent producers. "We are especially proud that El Paso is the first company to achieve Climate Action Leader(TM) status this year. We are also proud of being the first natural gas pipeline company to complete a third-party-certified inventory that covers all greenhouse gas emissions, including methane, from our California operations," said Doug Foshee, El Paso Corporation President and Chief Executive Officer. "Natural gas has the lowest GHG and air emissions intensity of all fossil fuels and provides about 20 percent of all the energy used in the United States today," according to Foshee. "Natural gas will continue to play a pivotal role in the nation's energy infrastructure and be integral to future greenhouse gas management and air quality strategies. As an industry leader, El Paso will continue to participate in the development of future comprehensive greenhouse gas programs," he said. The Registry, created by the California Legislature in 2000, is a non-profit public/private partnership that helps companies and organizations throughout the United States to track, publicly report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The results are certified by independent third-parties to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and standardization across participants and sectors. Organizations that are willing to meet the accounting standards and third party certification requirements of the Registry show their serious intent to address climate change. The Registry has been widely recognized as a gold standard for public reporting of greenhouse gases. "El Paso Corporation repeatedly demonstrates environmental leadership. They are the first natural gas pipeline company to join the Registry and also the first to achieve Climate Action Leader status for 2007," said Diane Wittenberg, President of the California Climate Action Registry. "Their leadership is a model for other companies to follow." According to the Registry, El Paso is the first organization in the Registry's history that submitted data without a single error. El Paso's certified GHG emission report for 2006 is available through the Registry's website at http://www.climateregistry.org/CARROT/Public/. In August 2006, El Paso became the first natural gas pipeline company to join the California Climate Action Registry. In addition to assessing and managing its own greenhouse gas issues, El Paso has been developing constructive programs to address greenhouse gas policies and solutions. The California Climate Action Registry is a non-profit public/private partnership that serves as a voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) registry to protect, encourage, and promote early actions to reduce GHG emissions. Over 240 major companies, cities, government agencies and NGOs measure and publicly report their GHG emissions through the Registry. http://www.climateregistry.org
