GE on Wednesday launched a US credit card that it said would allow
cardholders to reduce their carbon emissions through greenhouse gas emission
offsets.
The tool -- the first consumer finance product in GE's ecomagination
portfolio -- allows users to reduce their carbon footprint by automatically
contributing up to 1% of their card purchases to buy offsets, it said.
Card rewards designated for GHG reduction projects will be accrued over
the year, GE said, and then on Earth Day -- April 22 -- the rewards will be
used to buy and retire GHG emissions credits through GE AES Greenhouse Gas
Services, a joint venture between GE Energy Financial Services and AES, which
will identify and invest in projects that reduce GHG emissions.
When applying for the card, consumers will be able to select the type of
reward program they prefer, GE said. They can either contribute 1% of their
net card purchases to GHG emission reduction projects or contribute 0.5% to
reduction projects and receive 0.5% cash back as a credit in their monthly
statements, it said.
Cardholders will be able to switch back and forth between reward programs
whenever they choose, at no cost and with no loss of rewards, GE added.
