The Carbon Trust has unveiled a new carbon map which shows that Belfast produces 1,779,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide a year, or more than 4,800 tonnes per day. It is one of 33 UK towns and cities featured on the map.

The trust says business in the UK is responsible for 40% of carbon emissions - 35% in Belfast - and has an important role to play in tackling climate change. Tom Delay, chief executive of the Trust, pointed out that poor energy efficiency costs business an estimated pound(s)2bn annually.

"Implementing straightforward energy saving measures in the workplace could reduce energy bills by up to 20%, enhance companies' reputations and drastically cut their carbon footprint," he said as the Trust launched a national advertising campaign to encourage businesses to take action on climate change.
