US food processor Tyson Foods and synthetic fuels company Syntroleum
have formed a joint venture to produce "ultra clean" fuels using animal fat,
greases and vegetable oils, the companies said Monday.
The two have formed a new company, Dynamic Fuels, and intend to build
"multiple" facilities to produce the renewable fuels, they said in a
statement.
"Our venture with Tyson affords us the opportunity to apply part of our
established portfolio of technologies to produce next generation ultra-clean
renewable synthetic fuels that contribute to our nation's energy independence
while helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said Syntroleum CEO Jack
Holmes.
The companies said their fuels will target the diesel, jet and military
fuel markets.
Dynamic, which is a 50-50 JV, will build its first facility at an as-yet
undetermined site in the south-central US, with construction due to begin next
year. The plant, which will cost $150 million to build, is due to be completed
in 2010 and produce about 75 million gallons/year of synthetic fuel.
