Vietnam Set to Embrace Nuclear Energy

Jun 20 - United Press International

The Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission announced this week that the Asian nation has plans to build its first nuclear power plant by 2020.

Speaking at a news conference in Hanoi, experts said plans for the new energy plant are being mapped out and the nuclear facility should be online within 13 years, Thahn Nien reported Wednesday.

Members of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that before the plant can be opened, the Vietnamese government must create nuclear energy legislation to mandate the industry.

Those international officials also called for increased human resources training related to the industry before the inauguration.

Tuesday's announcement of the new nuclear power plant comes after last year's ruling by the United Nations' atomic agency that gave Vietnam permission to develop six nuclear-based projects, the newspaper said.
