11-03-07

A new basic long-term energy policy which calls for promoting self-dependent petroleum development and expanding nuclear power generation was approved by the Japanese government.
According to the new policy, which will guide the country on energy-related issues in the some next 10 years, Japan will attach great importance to developing nuclear power and make it a key source of electricity.

The policy says it is important for Japan to build more nuclear power facilities and accelerate the development of nuclear fuel recycling systems. The policy points out the necessity of strengthening the development of the oil industry, saying that the Japanese government intends to carry out active high-level diplomacy to facilitate efforts to develop oil.
One of the main goals of the newborn policy is to secure sufficient energy resources for Japan, Kyodo said, quoting government officials.
