Popularity of alternative
fuel cars surprises automakers
March 13 -- About 10.5 million alternative fuel automobiles are now traveling America´s roads, according to an automotive manufacturing trade group. That includes 1.5 million alternative fuel vehicles that were sold in 2006, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers said. "We believe that the numbers of alternative fuel autos on the roads continue to rise because consumers can choose from a variety of autos that reduce fuel use while still providing the utility, safety, performance and comfort they seek," said "said Dave McCurdy, president of the alliance. Alternative fuel vehicles include hybrid electric, ethanol capable, and clean diesel vehicles, the group said. Sales of such vehicles outpaced automakers´ expectations by 50 percent last year, the alliance said.
