San Francisco requires use of recycled plastic bags
New York (Platts)--28Mar2007
The City of San Francisco's Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance March
27 requiring the use of compostable plastic, recyclable paper and/or reusable
checkout bags by stores located in the City and County of San Francisco,
according to a Board of Supervisors meeting agenda.
The ordinance is part of San Francisco's greater goal of reducing
landfill waste by 75% by 2010 and zero waste by 2020. The measure would only
apply to supermarkets with over $2-million in annual sales and to pharmacies
with 5 or more City locations. The ordiance would apply to supermarkets six
months from the effective date and to pharmacies one year after the effective
date.
No effective date for implementing the ordinance was announced as there
still needed to be a public hearing on the issue at which time the ordinance
may be ammended.
