Pennsylvania recycling sets record

May 2 -

Pennsylvania recycled a record amount of material in 2005, according to stats the state released May 2.

The state recovered 4.86 million tons of recyclables in 2005, which saved consumers and businesses $263 million in disposal costs, using an estimated statewide disposal fee of $54 per ton. The recycled materials had an estimated market value of $577 million.

Recycling also avoided 2.5 million metric tons of air emissions and nearly 9,000 metric tons of water pollution in the state.

"The recycling industry is a significant contributor to Pennsylvania“s economic vitality and environmental health," said Gov. Edward G. Rendell.
