DOE 'reaching out' to refiners post-Enbridge; SPR could be tapped

Washington (Platts)--29Nov2007

The US Energy Department is "reaching out to refiners" in the Midwest to
assess their supply needs, and is prepared to offer assistance in the wake of
the explosion Wednesday on the Enbridge Pipeline system, according to a
department spokeswoman.

Oil from the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve "remains available" if
needed, she added. However, at this point, no SPR oil has been offered, the
spokeswoman said.

US Gulf Coast cash crudes were mixed in early trade Thursday after an
earlier surge on talk about the Department of Energy potentially supplying SPR
crude to refiners affected by the explosion near Enbridge's Clearbrook
terminal, trading sources said.

The incident initially forced the shutdown four crude lines, but Enbridge
subsequently has returned three of the lines to service.
