Maine committee votes to
reduce global warming Nov. 20 A joint committee of the Massachusetts legislature has voted in favor of legislation that would require the state to drastically reduce its global warming pollution. The legislation, approved Nov. 16 by the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture, would require the state to cut is global warming pollution to 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2020 and 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050. The bill is receiving support from the Union of Concerned Scientists, an advocacy group. "The Global Warming Solutions Act demonstrates leadership and foresight to help ensure our children and grandchildren inherit a safe climate," said John Rogers, senior energy analyst at the UCS. "The measure would put Massachusetts in the vanguard of states taking mandatory action to tackle global warming." The bill next goes to the full Senate for its consideration. Rogers said the Union of Concerned Scientists would work with the Legislature and the administration to move the initiative forward.
