Power plant pollutants fall for historic low

Nov. 19

Sulfur dioxide emissions from power plants in 2006 dropped to less than 10 million tons for the first time, according to a U.S. EPA report.

Sulfur dioxide emissions from electric power generation fell by 830,000 tons from 2005 to 9.4 million tons, which represents a 40 percent reduction from 1990 levels.

Meanwhile, nitrogen oxide emissions have declined by more than 3 million tons since 1990.

The emissions totals are outlined in the EPA´s Acid Rain Program and Related Programs 2006 Progress report, which was released Nov. 16.

The agency is crediting the federal Acid Rain Program with bringing about the reductions.

The report is available online at www.epa.gov/airmarkets/progress/arp06.html .
