Rockfeller Center tree with be really, really green

Nov. 21

The famous Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in New York will be green, really green, for the first time this year.

The tree will sport 30,000 light-emitting diode lights and therefore will require a fraction of the electricity traditionally used. It will reduce energy consumption from 3,510 kilowatt hours to 1,297 kilowatt hours per day. Also, for the first time, the tree also was cut using a handheld saw to reduce energy use. After the holiday season, the tree will be made into lumber for use by Habitat for Humanity.

Tishman Speyer Properties, the owner of Rockefeller Center, also announced the installation of a 70-kilowatt solar power system at 45 Rockefeller Center that will keep 67,392 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere each year. The company also plans to install an 18,000-square-foot green roof atop Radio City Music Hall to minimize wastewater and cool the area, as well as an ice chiller plant to cool the Rockefeller complex that will reduce energy consumption. Both projects are slated to be completed next year.
