Illinois feedlots must stop discharges

Sept. 28

The U.S. EPA has ordered five Illinois feedlots to stop unauthorized discharges of manure and wastewater and comply with the Clean Water Act.

The Environmental Protection Agency also ordered several of the feedlots to apply to the Illinois EPA for discharge permits. However, the U.S. EPA has not assessed penalties as part of its actions.

The feedlots are in northwest counties of the state in the Mississippi River watershed where impaired rivers and streams are common, according to the EPA. EPA inspectors noticed that the facilities were not using management practices to prevent discharges of manure and other animal production waste.

In order to comply, the feedlots may need to construct larger storage structures and move or redesign their feedlots.
