Letter from Sustainable Energy Network
As reported by Friends of the Earth:
"Under the guise of fighting global warming, the nuclear power industry
and its allies in Congress are pushing a plan to construct the first new
nuclear power plants in the U.S. in decades, and the plan's lynchpin is
to
make taxpayers the unwilling investors.
"Despite having already received over $77 billion in federal government
handouts, the nuclear industry is now lobbying for over $50 billion in
loan guarantees to build the new plants.
"Just last month, the first application for a new plant in 30 years was
submitted to federal regulators. Federal regulators expect at least 21
other applications for new plants in the next two years."
Fact sheets about the proposed nuclear loan guarantee program have been
prepared by Public Citizen's Energy Project; they can be found at:
A media release has also been issued by the Union of Concerned
Scientists
and may be found at:
Finally, the September 27 issue of "Rachel's Democracy & Health News"
includes an article by Peter Montague "Why Is Uncle Sam So Committee to
Reviving Nuclear Power?" It may be read at:
