Nuclear industry supports GHG reduction laws

Oct. 16

The nuclear energy industry supports federal action or legislation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while pointing out that nuclear power is an indispensable part of addressing climate change.

The Nuclear Energy Institute released its policy position regarding greenhouse gas reduction this month. It’s calling for a significant expansion of U.S. nuclear power generation to meet energy needs. That expansion will require federal and state policies relating to energy infrastructure and the environment, said Skip Bowman, NEI president and CEO.

Any legislation or action should involve all sectors economy and include long-term public and private funding to develop new technology to reduce carbon emissions. It also should establish market mechanisms, such as a cap-and-trade system, and set a moderate price for carbon that will not harm competition in the U.S. energy industry.

Nuclear power is the only proven technology available for wide-scale roll-out to meet increasing U.S. energy demand without generating greenhouse gas emissions, Bowman said.
