Pennsylvania governor says state is big renewable energy buyer

Oct. 24

Pennsylvania Gov. Edward G. Rendell is touting his state as the largest renewable energy buyer in the nation.

The state government purchases enough green energy to power 28 percent of its operations, the most of any state government in the United States, Rendell said. Under its contract with Community Energy Inc., it buys 277,399 megawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually, enough to make the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency´s list of the top 25 Green Power Partnership purchasers, the only state to do so.

Pennsylvania´s contract calls for 57 percent of its electricity to come from wind power and 43 percent from hydroelectric generation. It ranked 13th on EPA´s list, and only its wind power, 157,200 megawatt-hours, qualified for the ranking.

"When it comes to the development and consumption of green energy, Pennsylvania is leading by example," Rendell said. "Our commitment to purchasing clean, renewable energy has earned Pennsylvania the honor of being the only state in the country to be included in the top 25 list of renewable energy purchasers."
