Kansas utility to address climate change

Sept. 11 --

Kansas´ largest electric utility has formally adopted a policy to address climate change, which includes supporting greenhouse gas cuts as carbon reduction technologies are developed.

Westar Energy Inc.´s Energy Climate Change Policy outlines the actions the company will take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, educate the public about climate change and support public policy. The utility will increase its efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, including expanding energy efficiency programs, and support science-based education on climate change and its causes.

The company will base its greenhouse gas reduction strategies on sound science, as well as the best available economic information, according to the policy.

"The electric utility industry is facing important issues and we recognize the need for companies to be proactive in addressing climate concerns," said Bill Moore, president and CEO. "We are taking that step forward."
