Coal stocks dive at China's power plants

London (Platts)--23Apr2008

Coal stocks at China's major power plants which have a direct supply line from
captive coal mines have fallen to 46.69 million mt or 12 days of consumption
April 20, down from 53 million mt or 15 days of consumption at the beginning
of March, Wang Yeping, vice chairman of the China Electricity Regulatory
Commission said Tuesday.

Speaking at a meeting held by CERC, Wang said China's thermal coal supplies
were "generally tight".

Stocks at power plants in such provinces as Hebei, Anhui and Chongqing
Municipality have slumped to seven days of consumption.

Wang also noted that China may adjust electricity prices in light of the
rising coal prices, but the possibility has been clouded by a soaring consumer
price index in China.
