DOE works with wind to help Hawaii oil dependence

April 2

UPC Wind Partners LLC is partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy to study integrating wind power into Hawaii´s utility system to reduce its dependence on imported oil.

The DOE´s National Renewable Energy Laboratory will establish a research facility at UPC´s Kaheawa Wind Farm in West Maui, Hawaii. They will collaborate on studies to develop advanced wind energy technologies to deliver more renewable electricity to Maui´s existing electrical grids.

"Our Kaheawa Wind Farm is an ideal site to aggressively explore what can be done to reduce Hawaii´s dependence on imported oil," said Paul Gaynor, president and CEO of Newton, Mass.-based UPC.
