FirstEnergy agrees to report
emission reduction actions
FirstEnergy Corp. has agreed to a shareholder request to report the actions it is taking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Akron, Ohio-based utility will prepare a report detailing its energy efficiency initiatives and their impact on carbon dioxide emissions. The Presbyterian Church filed a shareholder resolution requesting the information. It cited concerns regarding the impact of future carbon reduction regulations on utilities, especially those generating much of their electricity from coal. "Many U.S. companies are confronting the risks and opportunities from climate change, but others are not responding and may be compromising their long-term competitiveness as a result," said Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres, the Boston-based social investment group that helped coordinate the shareholder resolution. FirstEnergy plans to prepare its report Dec. 1, said spokeswoman Ellen Raines. The company also recently created and filled the position of vice president of energy efficiency to coordinate its efforts in that area.
