Ford promises 30 percent GHG emissions cut by 2020

April 10

Ford Motor Co. has promised to cut greenhouse gas emissions in its U.S. and European vehicles 30 percent by 2020, and is the first automobile manufacturer to outline a plan to get there.

Shareholder groups had been pressuring the Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker to spell out how it would react to possible future carbon reduction regulations. Shareholder resolutions cited concern over the impact a carbon-constrained environment could have on Fordīs bottom line.

The Investor Network on Climate, a $5 trillion network of investors, led the charge. It, along Ceres, the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility and the Connecticut State Treasurerīs Office, dropped their resolutions in response to the April 9 announcement.

Other carmakers have agreed to report climate-change impacts on their business or set general greenhouse gas emission goals, but Ford is the first to outline a specific plan.
