Nationwide GHG emissions decreased in 2006

April 16

Nationwide emissions of greenhouse gases during 2006 decreased by 1.1 percent from the previous year, according to the U.S. EPA.

The agency attributed the decline to a milder winter, which resulted in less energy use for heating, and cooler summer conditions, which reduced energy use for air conditioning. In addition, higher transportation fuel prices reduced consumption, and electric utilities used more natural gas and renewable sources of energy to generate power.

The EPA released its findings in a report on April 15. The Inventory of U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990-2006 is available on the EPA Web site.
